Summer Yoga Tips

Summer Yoga Tips with Seitai Acupuncture

Yoga is supposed to be relaxing, but the summer heat and humidity can add an extra level of stress to your classes. At any of our Seitai Acupuncture offices in Brooklyn, Staten Island, or New York, NY, we recommend some level of yoga classes for all of our clients. We realize that the heat during summer can make them more difficult to enjoy, so try some simple planning tips and switch up a few things to make your summer yoga experience more joyful.

Eat More Water Based Foods

It might not feel like the most natural thing in the world, but pay attention to all the foods with high water content available this time of year. Start with sweet watermelon, and then add strawberries and pineapple, cucumber and celery, and a wide variety of green smoothies to get more water in every day.

Switch to Morning Yoga Classes

If your schedule allows it, change things up and start your day with yoga instead of using it to relax after work. It's almost always cooler just after dawn, and spending time in class is a fantastic way to begin your day relaxed and invigorated.

Consider Self-Practice

If your local yoga studio or classroom is always hot and crowded, consider using DVDs and self-practice at home, at least for part of the week. Your living room will be empty and cool and you'll keep in practice while avoiding the crowds.

Pare Down Your Wardrobe

It pays to dress cool during yoga in the summer. Crop tops, muscle tees, and shorts are at the top of the list during a heat wave. Store other clothing until the weather cools down. Go for breathable fabrics in lighter colors, and if you're doing your yoga at home, consider just a sports bra or a swimsuit top. Also, keep a hand towel handy for wiping face and hands, as well as a sweatband if your work gets intense enough.
