Neck Pain Acupuncture

Different Types of Neck Pain Treated by Our New York Acupuncturist

Neck pain can range from a simple overuse injury to an acute identifiable action that has caused injury.  It follows that pain can be anything from a dull ache to a sharp feeling in the neck.  Most often neck pain is not a serious condition and can be relieved in a few days.  If however, your neck pain continues for more than a week it can be a sign of a bigger problem and it may be time to seek medical attention.

Common Causes of Neck Pain

One of the most common causes of neck pain is overuse which can lead to muscle strain.  This can be from bad posture, sitting for prolonged periods, or having your neck at an awkward angle while watching your mobile phone to text.  Sleeping in awkward positions can also cause neck pain but it is usually remedied in a few days.  Traumatic injuries, such as whiplash, can also lead to neck pain.  The most common way people experience whiplash is through an auto accident.  Neck pain can also be indicative of a larger problem such as a heart attack, meningitis, or a disk or spinal injury.

How to Prevent Neck Pain

The first step to prevent neck pain is to identify what exactly is causing the pain.  It pain is a result of overuse, changing your daily activity can help ease the pain.  Strengthening muscles around the neck and spine can help reduce pain caused from bad posture.  Often, simply changing the ergonomics of a work environment can help ease pain.  Having a computer monitor and keyboard that is closer to the body or at a better height can reduce the amount of strain placed on the neck muscles.  If pain is caused by sleeping awkwardly it may be time for a new mattress or pillow to better suit the contours of the spine and neck.

How Our Acupuncturist Can Help

Seeing an acupuncturist is one of the best options to help ease chronic neck pain.  Often acupuncture is used to help treat both muscular and skeletal ailments within the body.  Many people have found success with acupuncture as an alternative to invasive medicine.  An acupuncturist can help identify where the pain is stemming from and work to ease the pain, often through other muscles and areas in the body.  People who experience neck pain from stress and tension rely on acupuncture to help ease stress in other muscles putting undue stress on the neck.
